History
In 1875, a group of engineers who had worked on the Suez Canal project purchased some of the equipment used in the canal excavation and established their own company. They secured a contract to construct the Khatatba pumping station, intended to supply the Beheira Canal with Nile water. They immediately acquired more equipment and built an industrial workshop in Khatatba (Al-Kubaniya). They also expedited the issuance of the Khedival decree, which was released in June 1881, establishing the first industrial joint-stock company, the Beheira Joint-Stock Company. The company began its operations by constructing the Khatatba pumping station. When the government was unable to pay the company its dues, it offered to purchase 121,681 feddans in the northern Delta in exchange for settling the outstanding payments. The company accepted, and its core business was amended in 1894 to include the reclamation, cultivation, and sale of fallow land. Thus, the company became the first Egyptian industrial joint-stock company to own its own equipment and undertake land reclamation at the beginning of the 20th century, at the height of the power and influence of the agricultural feudal system. The company also adopted a distinctive approach in selling reclaimed land to small farmers on easy terms and providing essential services to their lands. Furthermore, the company expanded its operations by adding all supporting activities such as mechanical services, manufacturing agricultural machinery and spare parts, irrigation gates, water pipes, petroleum tanks, floating cranes, river navigation units, canal dredging, and the construction of waterways and agricultural drainage systems. In doing so, it participated in major irrigation projects, and its fleet of dredgers was used in military operations during both World Wars.
- Following the nationalization of the company in 1961, its operations expanded significantly to serve the state's development plans.
- Its affiliation was transferred to the Public Sector Authority for Land Reclamation by Presidential Decree No. 15 of 1987.
- It was transformed into one of the subsidiaries of the Holding Company for Land Reclamation and Groundwater Research, according to Prime Ministerial Decree No. 106 of January 22, 2012, establishing the Holding Company for Land Reclamation and Groundwater Research under the umbrella of Public Business Sector Companies Law No. 203 of 1991 and its executive regulations.
- Currently, the company has effectively returned to the Public Business Sector Law No. 203 and is now affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation through the Holding Company for Land Reclamation and Groundwater Research.
- And now the company is expanding, covering all regions of the Arab Republic of Egypt with projects it has implemented, from Alexandria, Kafr El Sheikh, and El Arish in the north to Abu Simbel, Qastal, and Toshka in the south, and from El Arish, Sinai, and Safaga in the east to El Dabaa, the western edge of the desert road, and Fayoum in the west. Its operations, workers, and equipment have spread throughout the country, building, developing, and cultivating desert areas, and providing water and all types of utilities to serve development and reconstruction. Now over 130 years old, the company can say that it has contributed to the reclamation of nearly one million acres of agricultural land in Egypt and Libya, in addition to the new urban communities it has established across Egypt.
- Since 1983, the company has incorporated computer technology into its operations. From the outset, it has continuously developed and upgraded this technology, establishing a wide-ranging internal network that covers all its financial and administrative functions and project monitoring. This has led to a surplus of experience and capabilities, prompting the company to consider expanding into the sale and export of information technology to benefit a greater number of Egyptian companies and compete effectively in this technological field, building on its established track record of success in such competitions.
